EMDR Therapy
in Calgary

Trauma does not always respond to talk therapy alone. For many people, difficult memories feel stuck, replaying with the same emotional intensity no matter how many times they have been discussed. EMDR therapy offers a different path forward.

At Cascade Psychology and Wellness, our Calgary and Airdrie therapists are trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), a structured, evidence-based approach that helps your brain process distressing experiences so they lose their grip on your daily life.

What Is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It is a type of psychotherapy developed to help people recover from trauma and other distressing life experiences. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR uses bilateral stimulation (typically guided eye movements) while you briefly focus on a troubling memory. This process allows the brain to reprocess the memory in a way that reduces its emotional charge.

EMDR is recognized as an effective treatment by major health organizations including the World Health Organization and the American Psychological Association.

What Does EMDR Treat?

EMDR therapy is most commonly used for trauma and PTSD, but research supports its use for a range of concerns, including:

  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Childhood trauma and adverse experiences
  • Anxiety and panic
  • Phobias
  • Grief and loss
  • Depression rooted in past experiences
  • Low self-esteem tied to specific memories or events

How Does EMDR Work?

EMDR therapy typically unfolds across eight phases, from history-taking and preparation through active reprocessing and integration. Your therapist will work with you at your own pace, ensuring you feel safe and in control throughout the process.

Sessions are usually 60 to 90 minutes. The number of sessions needed varies depending on the nature and complexity of what you are working through. Some people experience meaningful shifts in just a few sessions; others benefit from a longer course of treatment.

You do not need to describe your trauma in detail for EMDR to be effective. Many clients find this aspect of the approach a significant relief.
